Pretoria - The wholesale price of diesel is set to decrease in the New Year, the Energy Department said in a statement Thursday.

“South Africa’s fuel prices are adjusted on a monthly basis, informed by international and local factors,” the statement read.

“The wholesale price of diesel, 0.05% sulphur and 0.005% sulphur, will decrease by 76c/l and 78c/l respectively and the wholesale price of illuminating paraffin will decrease by 63c/l and the single maximum national retail price (SMNRP) will decrease by 84.0c/l with effect from 06 January 2016.”

The retail price of petrol 95 Octane will drop by just 3c/l, however, while the price of 93 Octane will remain the same, also with effect from January 6, 2016.

Liquid petroleum gas (LPGas) will increase by 45c/kg.

The statement said that the main reasons for the fuel price adjustments were “the weakening of the Rand against the US dollar despite the drop in the prices of all petroleum products during the period under review”.

“The Minister of Energy, Ms Tina Joemat-Pettersson, has approved the adjustments to some of the pricing elements of the maximum retail price structure of Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPGas). The maximum retail margin of LPGas will increase by 50.0c/kg with effect from 06 January 2016.”
