A routine crime prevention patrol in Brooklyn led police to discover R3.34 million worth of drugs hidden inside a shop allegedly belonging to a Nigerian national.

Vigilant police entered the shop in Koeberg Road on March 9, just after 1:25pm, and noticed a suspicious 50-year-old man inside.

When the suspect saw police, he tried to flee the scene, running to a back room where the R3.34 million worth of tik was found inside plastic bags and in a box.

Police spokesperson, Malcolm Pojie, said: “The eradication of drugs, which poses a serious threat to the overall safety of Western Cape communities, remains a priority for the SAPS and all efforts will continue to address this plight through the arrests of those responsible for the distribution thereof.

“On March 9, 2025, members of the Provincial Operational Command Centre performed crime prevention patrols in Brooklyn, Maitland, when they received information of drugs that were being sold from a business situated in Koeberg Road, Brooklyn.

“The members operationalised the information and pounced on the shop where they encountered a suspicious male behind the counter.

“Upon noticing the members approaching, he ran to the back of the shop where he entered another room.

“After he exited the room on request from the members, they ensued with a search of the premises and discovered a box with plastic bags containing about 9.5 kg of methamphetamine (tik) with an estimated value of R3.34 million in an adjacent room.”

Pojie said the suspect made an appearance at the Cape Town Magistrates Court on charges of dealing in drugs.
