Cape Town - A fire gutted 12 train carriages at a shunting yard in Salt River on Monday.
No injuries were reported. Black smoke billowing from the fire could be seen kilometres away.
City Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson Jermaine Carelse said they had received a call about the fire just after 9.30am.
The first officer on scene assessed the situation and immediately called for more resources to be deployed.
Eight fire-fighting units were sent to the scene and 26 firefighters battled the blaze.
“Initial damage (reports) has the total of 12 carriages destroyed, and no injuries were reported,” Carelse said.
The fire was contained after about an hour, though crews continued with damping-down operations.
Both Transnet and Metrorail said that there were no damages to their infrastructure.
