Cape Town - There has been concern expressed online, after the West Coast SPCA announced it would be ceasing operations in the Vredenberg area at the end of January 2025.
According to the organisation, the Saldanha Bay Municipality was unable to renew the tender due to financial constraints.
“Since being awarded the tender to run the pound for the Saldanha Bay Municipality in 2017, we have been privileged to provide a much-needed service to the animals and pet owners in the community.
“Over the years, we have worked hand-in-hand with the municipality to care for countless animals, addressing cases of cruelty and neglect, and reuniting lost pets with their families.
“We deeply value the incredible working relationship we have enjoyed with the Saldanha Bay Municipality. Their support and collaboration have been instrumental in enabling us to fulfill our mission,” the SPCA said.
The organisation called on pet owners to continue to prioritise the health and well-being of their animals and to seek out alternative resources for animal care and welfare in the region.
The organisation also expressed its thanks to the Saldanha Bay Municipality, staff, volunteers and the community for their support and in helping them carry out their mandate of support for vulnerable animals.
Responding to the online announcement, Mayor Andrè Truter said the service of animal care would continue as per normal.
“It just won't be rendered by SPCA. It is a normal Supply Chain process that was followed as a contract comes to an end.”
When contacted, Truter directed queries to the Municipal Manager.
“This is a Supply Chain Process and therefore with the Administration,” they said.
