Cape Town - Grandmaster Jimmy Wong, who has been inducted into the kung fu martial arts hall of fame and is the shifu (mentor) of Cape Town-born Legends of Kung Fu world champion Muhammad Junaid “MJ Li” Chafeker, has arrived in the Mother City to promote the ancient Chinese practice.

Wong has sixth-generation direct lineage of the Wu Hao Tai Chi system and is an executive board member of the World Chin Woo Athletic Federation in Shanghai, China.

He will be in Cape Town for 10 days, conducting a Wu Hao Tai Chi and meditation seminar and workshop for adults, as well as offering Chinese medicine appointments for acupuncture.

“This is my first time in Cape Town and I am very grateful to shifu MJ Li Cape Town kung fu champion and teacher for hosting me. I look forward to working with him to promote kung fu and tai chi in Cape Town, South Africa,” the grandmaster said.

Wong is world renowned, with students and followers in more than 25 countries.

Chafeker’s mentorship with Wong started in 2009 and he has since gone on to become a gold medallist and three-time Legends of Kung Fu world champion.

“For me I am deeply honoured and excited to host my shifu/teacher grandmaster Jimmy Wong. I’m very excited for him to meet the youth and many of the students I have been coaching and training for a number of years now on the Cape Flats and in the province. I’m excited for the wellness seminar taking place on Saturday.

“I've had many teachers, but he’s definitely been the most influential.”

“Grandmaster Wong is also a specialist in Chinese acupuncture and medicine with close to 35 years’ experience. We can only tap into this vast ocean of knowledge he has of Chinese martial arts and medicine. It’s a massive honour for us to be hosting (him).”

Chafeker added that Wong would be back as a special guest at the first Africa Kids and Youth Kung Fu Tournament, which has been rescheduled for March 4 and 5 next year. It will be held at the UCT Sports Centre.
