WHILE several Curro learners earned a spot on the IEB’s Outstanding Achiever’s lists, Curro also celebrated their learners who have excelled against all odds.
They include Laura Sarmiento from Curro Klerksdorp who was diagnosed with an illness and wrote her exams from hospital, and Aneeq Poole from Curro Century City who is visually impaired and had to overcome several obstacles.
Curro CEO, Cobus Loubser, congratulated the matriculants and their teachers on a pass rate of 99% and praised their commitment and dedication.
“Well done to our 2 426 learners who wrote the 2024 IEB matric exams,” he said.
“Our learners from our campuses across the country did us proud, with 70.4% achieving a minimum of a C-average and 238 (10%) learners achieving an A average. You have helped us to uphold our record for academic excellence and demonstrated the fruits of our focus on quality education. We wish you all the best as you embark on the next stage of your journey and look forward to seeing how you shape your future and that of our country. Thank you also to our teachers and parents who have successfully supported these learners through their school careers, enabling them to achieve these results. I’m sure you are just as proud as I am.”
Roedean School’s Matric Class of 2024 achieved a 100% Bachelor’s Degree Pass rate with more than half the students scoring above 80%.
Overall, students achieved a combined average of 79.4% and an average of 4.42 distinctions per student. Additionally, 18 results ranked in the top 1% in various subjects.
According to Annabel Roberts, Head of Senior School at Roedean, the key to their success is a focus on holistic well-being.
“Because of this, we’ve seen the greatest improvements in students’ marks from the end of Grade 11 to Grade 12. Our approach demonstrates that the solution lies not in hyper-focusing on academic excellence only but in taking care of the student as a whole – emotionally, physically and spiritually. This has resulted in us achieving the second-best results we have ever achieved,” Roberts said.
“We increased break times, set aside time for meetings, sports and cultural activities, and created small, integrated tutor groups that encourage mentorship.”
The 2024 St Andrew’s College matrics achieved a 100% pass rate, with 98% of the 82 boys achieving a Bachelor’s Degree pass and all of them qualifying for further study after school.
The Dux Scholar was Murray Wilson, from Cape Town, who achieved an 89% aggregate, and eight distinctions in Accounting, Afrikaans First Additional Language, English Home Language, Geography, Life Orientation, Mathematics, Physical Sciences and Further Studies Mathematics: Calculus and Algebra.
The Diocesan School for Girls (DSG) celebrated a 100% pass rate, with 99% Bachelor’s Degree passes. There were 2.3 distinctions per candidate on average.
The top pupil was Isabella Rodwell with an aggregate 88.2%, and 7 distinctions.
“These results are a testament to the dedication of our students and the unwavering support of our staff and community,” said Dr. Petra Gentz, Deputy Head Academics.
St Mary’s DSG, Pretoria celebrated a 100% pass rate and 100% bachelor’s degree pass rate.
Madeleine Kruger achieved nine distinctions and excelled across subjects including Physical Sciences, Life Sciences and Further Studies English. Zahra Naidoo also achieved nine distinctions, only 2% shy of Madeleine’s average. Hadia Emmambux achieved eight distinctions.
“The Class of 2024 has proven that when young women believe in themselves and are supported by a nurturing environment, they can achieve extraordinary things,” said Head of St Mary’s DSG, Odelle Howard.
