Durban — As National Oral Health Month unfolds, Affinity Health has emphasised the significance of selecting a proper toothbrush and toothpaste to ensure optimal dental hygiene.

CEO Murray Hewlett highlights that improper choices can lead to gum recession and cavities, urging consumers to pay closer attention to their oral care products.

“Choosing the right toothbrush and toothpaste is more important than most people realise. According to the National Library of Medicine, using the wrong type of brush can cause gum recession, and not all toothpastes contain the necessary ingredients to maintain cavity-free teeth,” Hewlett said.

The health insurance agency recommended several key factors when selecting a toothbrush:

  1. Bristle Softness: Opt for soft bristles to protect gums and enamel.
  2. Head Size: choose a compact head size for better access to hard-to-reach areas.
  3. Handle Comfort: Ensure the handle offers a comfortable grip.
  4. Manual vs. Electric: Both manual and electric brushes are effective, but electric models may benefit those with dexterity challenges.
  5. American Dental Association (ADA) Seal of Acceptance: Choose toothbrushes with the ADA Seal of Acceptance. This seal ensures that scientific experts have independently reviewed the toothbrush for safety and effectiveness.

In a statement, Affinity Health highlighted specific dental needs: Consider any specific dental issues you may have, such as:

  • Sensitivity: To assist in relieving sensitivity, use toothpastes that include potassium nitrate or strontium chloride.
  • Whitening: If you’re concerned about stains, whitening toothpastes contain mild abrasives and chemical agents to remove surface stains.
  • Gum Health: Toothpastes formulated for gum health often contain stannous fluoride or triclosan to fight gingivitis.
  • Tartar Control: These types of toothpastes contain ingredients like pyrophosphates to prevent tartar build-up on teeth.

When it comes to toothpaste, fluoride content is crucial for enamel strength. Consumers should also consider specific dental needs, like sensitivity or whitening. Affinity Health advises looking for the ADA Seal of Acceptance to ensure product efficacy.

Additionally, sustainability is becoming increasingly important. Options like bamboo toothbrushes and recyclable toothpaste packaging can help reduce environmental impact.

Affinity Health said consulting a dentist remains vital for personalised recommendations. As one reassess their oral care routine this month, remember: the right tools, paired with proper usage, are key to a healthy smile.
