The prestigious Maritzburg College has announced the appointment of Alan Redfern as its 16th headmaster, a decision that has been met with enthusiasm and optimism by the school community.
The announcement by the School Governing Body (SGB) confirmed that Redfern will officially take up the role on 1 July 2025.
Redfern, who currently serves as headmaster at Stanford Lake College in Limpopo, brings an impressive wealth of experience to his new position, with 27 years dedicated to the education sector across various schools.
Redfern began his career at Maritzburg College as a biology and physical education teacher, giving him invaluable insight into the school’s culture and ethos.
In his first remarks following the appointment, Redfern expressed his excitement for the role, saying, “Maritzburg College is synonymous with excellence, passion, pride, and competitiveness. It has always been a school to be reckoned with, and I am thrilled by the opportunity to build on its exceptional reputation with the support of the College community.”
He further expressed a strong alignment with the school’s value system, which he believes is critical for boys' education. “With 162 years of history, the College has a strong identity and the resilience to embrace the challenges of the future,” he added.
In a statement, the SGB said: “We are proud and delighted to announce the appointment of Mr. Alan Redfern as the 16th Headmaster of Maritzburg College. His extensive experience and leadership skills will position Maritzburg College as a continued leader in South African education.”
Redfern is married to Dionne Redfern, the headmistress of Epworth High School for Girls. The couple has two adult children, Megan and David.
The reputed Maritzburg College was founded in 1863 and is one of the oldest boys' schools in KwaZulu-Natal.
