Durban — KwaZulu-Natal police are searching for the suspects that attempted to rob a cash-in-transit vehicle in the KwaMbonambi policing precinct, on Tuesday, which led to the death of a motorist.

The incident occurred along Dune Road at Nzalabantu. It is alleged that during the attempted robbery one of the suspects was knocked down by a vehicle that was passing by, said provincial police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda.

“The suspects then shot the driver of the vehicle that allegedly knocked their accomplice. She died at the scene. Another vehicle was also hijacked during the attempted heist,” Netshiunda said.

On Facebook, the City of uMhlathuze’s Councillor Henning de Wet said an innocent motorist tragically lost their life during the cash-in-transit heist.

“This senseless act of violence is a devastating reminder of the growing criminality plaguing our communities,” De Wet said.

“We cannot and should not tolerate such criminals in our country! These individuals threaten our safety, disrupt our communities, and rob families of their loved ones,” De Wet said

In a 2-minute 16-second video of the incident, those who recorded the video can be heard saying the suspects were “dogs” and “known”.

At times the video is inaudible due to background noise.

Several gunshots and what is believed to be an explosion can be heard.

Before the video ends, one of the people behind the video says one suspect was run over by a vehicle.

In a Facebook post, the KZN Department of Education said it mourns the death of Miss Maphumulo who made a lasting contribution to education. She is believed to be the motorist that was shot.

“Ms. Maphumulo, an award-winning educator from Mzingazi Primary School, inspired countless learners and colleagues through her passion and excellence.”
