At just 26 years old, Kyle Desai, also known as KD, is carving out a unique space for himself in the South African music scene. Hailing from Isipingo, a suburb of Durban, this multi-talented artist is a singer, rapper, songwriter, and producer whose captivating sound and powerful lyrics resonate deeply with a growing audience.

Raised in the vibrant community of Lotus Park, Desai's love for music ignited at the tender age of eight. Using two small green bar stools and a pair of spoons as makeshift drums, the young artist's passion was clear from the start. “Music isn’t a business to me; I love what I do. Money is just a bonus,” he reflects. With the support of his father, who gifted him a guitar at age 12, Desai's dedication solidified as he pursued a dream of performing on grand stages before millions.

However, his journey has not been without its trials. After completing his matriculation, he faced the harsh reality of financial constraints, prompting him to join the workforce rather than pursue further education like many of his peers. Growing up, he often felt like an outsider—bullied and told that his dreams were unrealistic. Yet, these challenges only fueled his determination to succeed. “While kids were out having fun, I was in my room learning about music, and instruments, and creating my songs,” he recalls. This resilience has paved the way for a career defined by artistry that goes beyond mere entertainment.

Desai's breakout single “Durban” skyrocketed in 2021, receiving significant airplay on local and international radio stations. This success marked a pivotal moment, confirming his belief that he could make his mark in the industry—an affirmation of his hard work and commitment to his craft. He has since performed at numerous shows, and his music has begun to resonate not just within South Africa but far beyond its borders.

One of Desai's most memorable experiences as an artist was performing at the Table Tennis World Cup, an opportunity that reached an audience of an astonishing 100 million viewers worldwide. “That was incredible, but what truly touched my heart was a young kid who came up to me and said, ‘KD, one day I hope to be just like you,’” he shares. Knowing that he inspires the next generation is a reward he values deeply.

As the music scene continues to evolve, Desai maintains that while genres may shift, his unique sound remains intact, merely adapting to the cultural context around him. “I've never changed; I’ve simply adapted,” he emphasises. Undoubtedly, a significant source of his strength comes from his faith. “God has been first in everything, seeing me through tough times. It’s only because of Jesus that I could persevere and keep pushing forward,” he explains.

While his star continues to rise, he balances his musical pursuits with a practical job as a Parts Administrator at Hyundai until his music can fully support him. With a new single titled “Enough” on the horizon, inspired by the love he shares with his partner, Desai looks forward to sharing more music that resonates with people. Set to be released soon, the track is described as a vibrant love anthem filled with positive energy.

Looking ahead, Desai is excited about his debut album slated for release in the upcoming year. “You can expect more music, more shows. I’m committed to creating and sharing my art with the world,” he promises. To young artists embarking on their journeys, Desai offers a heartfelt message: “Put God first in everything you do. Remember, you’re not defined by what people say you are. Believe in yourself, and one day, just like me, your dreams will become a reality.
