Local comedian and "The Daily Show" host Trevor Noah is under strict doctor's orders to not utter a word after losing his voice following the Global Citizen Festival SA on Sunday.

Fellow comedian Michael Kosta spoke on Noah's behalf during Tuesday night's episode of the late-night talk show.

While Noah's hilarious presence was still felt on set, Kosta told the audience that, indeed, the show “was a little different” as Noah was ordered not to speak, or risk needing surgery.

Noah also issued a statement on social media announcing that he will be cancelling all stand-up shows for 2018 to avoid permanent damage to his vocal cords.

He also shared another post thanking fans for their support, adding that he's "silent but deadly". He wrote: "Silent but deadly ... I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you. Thank you to everyone who supports me in my stand up, thank you to everyone who supports me at the Daily Show and thank you to everyone who has supported me when I lost my voice. It's a little scary sometimes but your kind words have kept me upbeat and grateful for the things I do have. Hopefully I'll be speaking again soon but until then I'll make sure my mime game is gonna be in point (sic).
