Nestle has recalled a batch of Lactogen infant formula that may contain higher amounts of iron, zinc and copper than declared on the label, the company said.
Spokesperson Theo Mxakwe said only Lactogen 1 400g tins were affected and about 250 tins could have the higher than declared amounts in them.
All 250 tins were produced on November 6 last year.
As a precautionary measure, Nestle was recalling the entire batch made on that day.
The batch recalled was Batch Code 73100179 L1, produced in South Africa, and was recalled in South Africa, Botswana and Zambia.
The batch code and time of manufacture appear at the bottom of each tin.
"This product is not suitable for consumption.
"Once reconstituted, the affected product may change colour, have a rancid smell, taste and in some instances separate," the company said in a statement.
