At just 20 years old, Levi Gabriel Green (@foster_kid0) is a beacon of hope for many, drawing on his past experiences to inspire others.
Born and raised in Stanger (KwaDukuza), Green's journey is marked by resilience and determination, qualities that have defined his transition from a foster child to a burgeoning social media influencer and aspiring actor.
He has over 43 million likes on TikTok and has used the platform to branch into acting.
With his infectious charisma and a desire to spread joy, Green has harnessed the power of digital platforms to build a life he once thought was impossible.
The influencer and actor’s life took a difficult turn when, at just six months old, his mother left him in the custody of his father, who struggled with mental and physical disorders.
It was then that he entered the foster care system, being taken in by a compassionate woman from his community, Edith Mary Williams, who became his first foster mother.
Under her care, Green thrived. But when an illness struck, he was moved to a less welcoming environment.
Despite facing hardships and experiencing neglect, one aspect of this new foster family remained constant: their insistence on academic excellence.
He recalled: “They appreciated good grades and that instilled a sense of discipline that I’m truly grateful for.”
After going through various foster homes, Green ultimately found his footing in life and academics. He completed his schooling and achieved the highest certificate in business management from the Damelin Randburg Campus in 2023.
Following this achievement, he took a leap of faith, embracing a new chapter of his life, launching his career as a social media content creator the very next day after completing his matric.
Green’s journey gained momentum, bringing him to Johannesburg, where social media allowed him to secure a bursary, move into his first apartment and nurture his creative aspirations.
Leveraging his platform, he became a source of positivity, aiming to make the world laugh and reminding people not to take life too seriously.
“Social media has been my salvation. A means to connect with others and share my experiences. More importantly, it’s given me the opportunity to uplift and inspire other foster children who might be struggling in abusive homes,” said Green.
However, the journey as an influencer is not without its trials. Despite amassing a significant following, the financial stability that often accompanies such success has been elusive.
“One month, you might be paid, and the next two, you won’t. Juggling rent, groceries, and the lifestyle of a city can be challenging when funds come in sporadically,” explained Green.
Yet, he remains optimistic and continues to push through the challenges, drawing strength from the supportive community he’s built in Johannesburg, peppered with opportunities from major brands and interactions with renowned South African celebrities.
For those in the throes of pursuing their dreams, Levi advised: “Take the time to truly discover who you are and what you want. Once you have that clarity, everything else falls into place.
“Stay determined and hungry – it’s a mantra I believe in. It’s critical to leverage whatever resources you have at your disposal to start your journey.”
With aspirations of furthering his studies in acting, he plans to delve more deeply into the craft, while also fortifying his faith. “In 2025, I’ll focus on my relationship with God and navigate away from distractions like clubbing and drinking,” he affirmed.
Green's narrative serves as a reminder that with perseverance and self-belief, one can rise above their circumstances and carve out a fulfilling life.
