If you're gearing up for a night out, the excitement often centres around the drinks you'll be enjoying.

One trend that has captured many partygoers' attention in recent years is the combination of alcohol and caffeinated energy drinks. While this may appear to provide a refreshing kick, medical professionals warn that the blend could come with significant risks.

Medicine specialist Dr Nhlakanipho Mkhize took to TikTok to highlight the hazardous effects of mixing spirits with energy drinks, emphasising that high caffeine levels can lead to unintended consequences.

“There’s this tendency of mixing spirits and energy drinks. I just want to warn you of the dangers of mixing these. I see this happening all the time,” he stated. “It's very dangerous because alcohol is a suppressant and the energy drink is a stimulant.”

Mkhize explained that caffeine found in energy drinks effectively masks the depressant qualities of alcohol.

This dual effect can give drinkers a false sense of sobriety, prompting them to consume more than they normally might.

“You risk getting overly intoxicated because your body has absorbed enough alcohol while the energy drink hides its effects,” he cautioned. “This can lead to alcohol poisoning and risky behaviour, especially when you're under the influence.”

In addition to the immediate effects on cognition and behaviour, Mkhize also warned of long-term health benefits and potential discomfort that could arise from the combination.

“Binge drinking affects your pancreas, and both alcohol and caffeine make you urinate frequently, which can lead to dehydration, fatigue, dizziness and headaches,” he added.

In response to a question about the best way to enjoy whisky, Mkhize suggested simply using water and ice.

Additionally, when prompted about coffee consumption causing kidney failure, he confirmed that it could occur if accompanied by fresh milk on an empty stomach.

If the thought of mixing spirits with high-caffeine beverages gives you pause, here are some alternatives that promise both taste and a balanced experience in a social setting:

Choose quality over quantity: The vibrancy found in premium spirits can easily be overshadowed by the allure of hyper-caffeinated mixers.

Instead, explore the rich flavours of classics like gin, vodka, or rum, complemented by quality mixers such as tonic water or fresh fruit juices.

A well-crafted cocktail celebrating the spirit’s nuances will consistently reward the palate.

Tone it down with lower-alcohol options: If full-strength drinks seem daunting, consider light beers or lower-alcohol cocktails.

These options allow you to engage in social drinking without straying far from moderation, thereby fostering a relaxed atmosphere where conversation and enjoyment reign.

Stay hydrated: One of the simplest yet most effective ways to enjoy spirits responsibly is by maintaining hydration.

Alternating alcoholic beverages with water or herbal teas can help stave off hangovers and allow you to savour the distinctive notes of your chosen spirits without overwhelming your system.
