Durban - A 17-year-old girl was shot and robbed while she stood waiting for a taxi in the Trenance Manor area of Phoenix, north of Durban, on Wednesday.

Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Nqobile Gwala said charges of attempted murder and robbery had been opened at Phoenix police station for investigation.

Gwala said it was alleged that a 17-year-old victim was in Rose Manor Crescent in Trenance Manor when she was shot in the thigh and robbed of her cellphone by an unknown suspect.

Reaction Unit SA spokesperson Prem Balram said residents contacted the unit at 12.18pm and requested medical assistance for an injured female.

Balram said when Rusa members arrived at the scene, they discovered the teenager lying in the road with a gunshot wound to her left thigh.

“According to the victim, she was waiting for a taxi when an unknown individual approached her. He shot her without warning and stole her Huawei P8 Lite cellphone, (after which) she fell to the ground,” he said.

Balram said the robber had fled on foot.

Last week, The Mercury reported that a woman was attacked while she was waiting to enter the property she rents in the Lotusville area of Verulam.

Balram said the woman was standing outside the property on Cassia Road on Thursday afternoon when she was approached by a man.

“CCTV footage showed the female waiting in the driveway when a lone suspect approached her and robbed her of her laptop and cellphone,” he said.

According to Balram, the suspect was armed with a knife.
