BMW rising star Chaz Davies rode to an emphatic double win on Sunday at the same circuit where he took his maiden World Superbike podium in 2012, after two potential winners were forced back to the pits.

Aprilia works rider Eugene Laverty and Kawasaki's Tom Sykes each experienced technical problems - while they were on the lead - during lap 4 and 5 respectively. Laverty, however, went back went back on track later on to test the RSV4 after the work done by his crew.

South African riders, meanwhile had mixed fortunes at the intimidating 5.344km Motorland Aragon circuit.

RACE 1

Davies kept it together after his rivals fell by the wayside to come home a clear winner, 5.216sec ahead of Laverty's team mate Sylvain Guintoli.

BMW's chances for a one-two went west when Marco Melandri picked up a false neutral that cost him three places, although he managed to fight his way back from fifth to third by chequered flag.

A technical problem on the last lap stopped Aprilia privateer Davide Giugliano from finishing fourth, while Ducati veteran Carlos Checa came home seventh behind Jonathan Rea (Honda), Loris Baz (Kawasaki) and Jules Cluzel (Suzuki).

RACE 2

Davies was unstoppable in the in the Aragon sunshine as he repeated his first-race success, well clear of Guintoli, after Aprilia team leader Laverty lost the front of his RSV4 at Turn 2 on the very first lap after outdragging Davies and Sykes into Turn 1.

Sykes held off a strong challenge from Giugliano to take third, with Melandri fifth - not as competitive as in race 1 but still able to finish ahead of Baz and Cluzel. Both French riders had an outstanding Race 2, as Baz started from the last position on the grid and Cluzel moved off from the pit lane.

Checa, on his home circuit, finished eighth.

Guintoli's two seconds and Laverty's two DNF's moved the French rider to the top of the championship standings on 85 points, ahead of Davies' 63 and Laverty on 45.

WORLD SUPERSTOCK

BMW's Sylvain Barrier opened his defence of his 2012 Superstock 1000 title in the best possible way by romping home to a three-second win from former World Superbike Ducati rider Niccolò Canepa.

Barrier took the lead down the long main straight on lap 16 and quickly opened enough of a gap that Canepa was unable to strike back.

Barrier's sixth win in the series completed a perfect weekend for the French youngster, after qualifying on pole.

Canepa's Superstock comeback was a success as the experienced rider from Genoa led the early part of the race and tried not to lose contact with Barrier, but a lack of horsepower on the straight didn't help.

The final spot on the podium went to Argentinian Leandro Mercado on a Pedercini Kawasaki, back for a full Superstock 1000 and showing some real confidence on track.

It was a wasted opportunity for Jeremy Guarnoni (Kawasaki), who was closing in on the leading four in the early stages but ran wide and dropped back to 10th. He did well to make his way back into contention by the end, snatching fourth from Ducati privateer Eddi La Marra with a brave overtaking manoeuvre at Turn 16 on the last lap that gave hiome a 0.050sec advantage at the line.

Potential podium finisher Lorenzo Savadori, on the second Pedercini Kawasaki, crashed out of third on lap seven, after posting a new Superstock lap record of 2min01.074 on lap three.

South Africans Greg Gildenhuys (BMW) and David McFadden (Honda) turned in solid performances to finish 10th and 11th respectively.
