Renault Mégane gets GT treatment

A few years ago, the GT badge made its way onto the voluptuous rump of the previous Mégane to signify a well-balanced semi-performance model - with 120kW on tap it neatly bridged the gap between the naturally aspirated 2-litre and the hard-core RenaultSport versions.

It was easy to assume that Renault was doing something similar when word came that it was releasing a GT version of its new Megane, but now that the car's been a launched, you can put aside any aspirations for a semi-hot hatchback.

In reality, the new 'GT Line' is a 'Sports Pack' for the 1.4-litre TCe petrol model, which produces 96kW at 5500rpm and 190Nm at 2250rpm and is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox.

It's available in both three-door Coupe and five-door Hatch configurations, the latter also getting the lower sports suspension system already fitted to all three-door models.

So what else sets the GT apart then?

Basically it brings some sportier styling features to the already generous Dynamique equipment level. The most notable feature, externally, is a bolder bumper design that features a reshaped grille and an RS-like gloss black centre section. Furthermore, the GT Line adds black headlight backgrounds, dark metal-coloured recesses for the fog lights and anthracite grey mirror housings.

The rear end has also been given a makeover, with a contrasting diffuser and 'GT Line' badging.

Of course, a bespoke set of wheels is also in place, 17-inch alloys finished in - you guessed it - a dark metal colour. Finally, a unique paint colour called Malta Blue is available exclusively on this model.

The interior has also been given its fair share of RS-influenced motifs, including the front sports seats that come straight out of the aforementioned performance model. In the instrument cluster, an analogue speedo replaces the normal model's digital display and other unique cabin features include aluminium pedals, polished carbon door handles and 'GT Line' badges on the dashboard trim strip, head rests and front door sills.

Standard specification, as with the Dynamique model, is already comprehensive, with items such as a Carminat TomTom integrated navigation system, dual zone climate control and cruise control all standard.
