BMW's new 6 Series has just arrived in South Africa in Convertible form - remember the open-top was unveiled before the Coupe overseas so you can expect that one to reach our shores around September this year.
The local Convertible range offers two models: A 640i that sets you back R914 558 and a 650i that surges past the million mark, at R1 178 530.
Both models are powered by direct injection petrol engines with TwinPower turbo technology and the 'entry-level' variant has a version of BMW's familiar three-litre straight-six, good for 235kW at 5800 - 6000rpm and 450Nm between 1300 and 4500rpm in this guise.
If that doesn't do it for you, the 650i has a 4.4-litre V8 that churns out 300kW at 5500 - 6400rpm and 600Nm at 1750 - 4500rpm. BMW claims a 0-100km/h sprint of 5.7 seconds for the 640i and five on the dot for the 650i, while combined consumption is pegged at 7.9 for the former and 10.7 for the latter.
Both engines are mated to an eight-speed Sports automatic transmission and an idle-stop system to keep consumption in check.
Highlights of the new 6 Convertible include an upgraded fabric soft top with 'fin' architecture and a retractable glass rear window, a newly developed chassis with Drive Dynamic Control as standard and Adaptive Drive as an option and many high-tech gadgets in the cabin, including an upgraded head-up display, BMW Night Vision and Parking Assistant.
