The body of a 22-year-old woman was discovered in the early hours of Sunday morning in an informal settlement in Canelands, north of Durban.
The KZN police spokesperson, Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed the incident.
“Police in Verulam have opened a murder case following an incident in which the body of a 22-year-old woman was found in Canelands, Verulam on December 1.
“When police responded to the crime scene, the deceased was found lying between the shacks with multiple stab wounds. The motive for the killing is unknown,” said Netshiunda.
Members of Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) responded to the scene at approximately 6.30am, where they found the woman lying on her side.
"On the Reaction officers found the lifeless woman lying in a left lateral position. Her brown jersey was blood soaked. Officers discovered blood splatter on a wall next to her body," said Rusa spokesperson, Prem Balram.
Balram said investigation revealed that the woman lived in the area and had been at a local shebeen on Saturday night.
"Details leading up to her murder could not be confirmed, but it was alleged that residents noticed blood on the deceased's boyfriend's clothes following the discovery of her body," said Balram.
The man, whose identity has not been released, has reportedly fled the area.
