Four suspects linked to the brutal murder of police officer, Siyabonga Zama Prince Thango during a brazen armed obbery at a Vosloorus liquor store in Gauteng have been arrested.
The suspects, Hloniphani Cebolenkosi Nala, 28, Tshepo Hopewell Langa, 28, Nduduzo Xaba, 27, and Mnelisi Nkosikhona Mbatha, 28, were arrested on Monday, December 2, following months of intensive investigations. The arrests were carried out by the Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit (SOCIU) under the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks).
The deadly incident unfolded on July 21, 2023, at approximately 6.45pm at the Shoprite Liquor store in the Goldspot Shopping Centre, Vosloorus.
“As they entered the parking area, suspects at the entrance opened fire, fatally shooting Constable Siyabonga Zama Prince Thango,” said police spokesperson, Captain Lloyd Ramovha.
The constable was part of the police’s Crime Prevention Unit, which responded swiftly to the robbery.
During the subsequent investigation, law enforcement recovered an R5 rifle used during the crime. Under the guidance of the Boksburg Senior Public Prosecutor, the efforts culminated in the arrests earlier this week.
The suspects have appeared in the Vosloorus Magistrate's Court on charges of murder and robbery, with their case postponed to January 16, 2025.
“This operation's success underscores the dedication and effectiveness of our members in pursuing justice and ensuring the safety of our communities. The Gauteng Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation remains committed to holding those who commit such heinous acts accountable,” said Major General Ebrahim Kadwa of the Hawks.
