The High Court in Mpumalanga has issued a preservation order which was sought by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, also known as the Hawks, and the Asset Forfeiture Unit for a white Toyota Hilux single cab bakkie which was allegedly used to transport unlicenced firearms.
A preservation order is a court order that prevents the disposal or dissipation of assets, ensuring the items remain secured while investigations or legal proceedings related to potential forfeiture continue.
Hawks spokesperson in Mpumalanga, Warrant Officer Thandi Tshabalala said the vehicle is valued at R320,000. The preservation order was given on Monday.
“On November 7 2024, members of the SAPS flying squad unit were doing their normal patrol duties around R537 between White River and Sabie. The members noticed a Toyota bakkie that was driving at high-speed and not stopping at a stop sign. Members tried to stop the bakkie but the driver sped off,” said Tshabalala.

A high-speed chase ensued and the bakkie was later intercepted. The vehicle was searched and police found a pistol and an emergency light.
A further search in the bakkie unearthed 11 rifles, two hand grenades, numerous handguns and various calibres of live ammunition. The driver of the bakkie was arrested and the different items including the Toyota Hilux were seized.
“The matter was referred to the Hawks priority crime specialised investigation unit for further handling.
After additional investigations, the application for a preservation order was made to the court, and has been granted.
