An Eastern Cape policeman was gunned down outside his home on Saturday evening.
The motive for the killing is unknown at this stage.
Police said the 58-year-old Warrant Officer, attached to the Stock Theft and Endangered Species unit, was gunned down in front of his home at around 8:30pm.
Eastern Cape police spokesperson Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa said according to preliminary reports the cop was shot by armed suspects in front of his home in the KwaMabefu Location outside King Williams Town.
"When police arrived on the scene, they were shown the victim's body."
Mawisa said he had sustained a single gunshot wound to the head.
"Upon investigation, police noticed none of his belongings had been taken and his vehicle was on the scene."
Mawisa said the motive for the killing is unknown and will form part of the investigation.
"The case has been referred to the Directorate of Priority Crime and Investigation unit (DPCI) for further investigation."
The Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene said the attack on the police member is an attack on the authority of the state, and it will never be tolerated.
She encouraged community members to assist the Investigating Officers with information that could lead to the arrest of the perpetrator/s.
"We extend our heartfelt condolences to the member's family and colleagues, and may his soul rest in peace,"said Mene.
National police minister Senzo Mchunu said according to the latest crime statistics 17 cops lost their lives in three months.
Thirteen of the cops were killed in the line of duty.
A total of 17 suspects were arrested.
Mchunu said four of them have been handed life sentences.
