JOHANNESBURG - The Portfolio Committee on Communications
has concluded the process of interviewing candidates for the Independent Communications Authority
of South Africa (ICASA) Council.
The Committee shortlisted
15 candidates on August 25 but interviewed 13 candidates due to the withdrawal
of Prof Onkaetse Mmusi and Mr Themba Phiri.
The interviewed candidates
were Ms Thembeka Simane, Mr Andrew Phetho, Adv Cawekazi Mahlati, Ms Natalie-Ann
Delport, Dr Mashilo Boloka, Ms Nomonde Gongxeka-Seope, Mr Rubben Mohlaloga, Mr
Thabo Makhakhe, Mr Peter Hlapolosa, Ms Lulama Mokhobo, Mr Ashraf Patel, Ms Kate
Skinner and Mr Phosa Mashangoane.
Members of the Committee posed
questions on various issues relating to regulation, governance, legislation,
ethics, broadcast licenses, digital migration and challenges that may be faced
by ICASA councillors in executing their fiduciary duties.

The Committee is
encouraged by the calibre of candidates that were interviewed today and by the
level of experience possessed by the candidates. The Committee would
like to thank all candidates for availing themselves for the interviews.
The next step for the Committee would
be to deliberate on the interviews and recommend the successful candidates
to the National Assembly for adoption.
