Heavy weather: Check your policy

“South Africans should examine and understand their insurance policies and ensure they are covered for all possible eventualities. Being under-insured opens people to risks,” says Vera Nagtegaal, executive head Hippo.co.za.

When submitting claims for storm damage, there are a few reasons why insurers could reject them. These include whether the damage directly relates to the bad weather and what the condition of the property was in the first place.

A property claim might be rejected if the property didn’t have adequate drainage, retaining walls were not thick enough or foundations were poor quality. Nagtegaal said policy holders should read their policies at least once a year to ensure they are aligned to the current value and status of the asset.
