The artwork fetched a final price of $13.4million (more than R205m) and set a new world auction record for the artist.

Lempicka’s previous record work was for the 1929 oil painting La Musicienne, which sold for more than $8m in 2018.

The artist, who died in 1980 the age of 81, has now posthumously achieved the most expensive price for a painting by a Polish artist.

She spent her working life in France and the US and is best known for her polished art deco portraits of aristocrats and the wealthy, and stylised paintings of nudes.
