This year marks the second anniversary of the tragic passing of Kiernan “AKA” Forbes, leaving behind a legacy of music and an unfilled void in the hearts of his family, fans, and friends.
In an emotional tribute on what would have been his 37th birthday, Lynn Forbes, the mother of the late rapper, reflected on the profound bond they shared and the indelible mark he left on her life.
“On this day, at 1:15 in the early morning, I heard your first cry; I felt your warmth as you were placed on my chest. Your natural birth, 37 years ago, left me exhausted yet invigorated. I couldn't take my eyes off you, counting every tiny toe, every little finger. My tiny baby boy, my first-born, Your hands wide open, long legs dangling. 2.75 kg, 54cm. So perfect, so full of promise, you left me in awe. In that moment, my heart changed forever; you made me a mother. I was yours, and you were mine. A bond unbreakable, an infinite love. I can never say happy heavenly birthday; for your birthday is an occasion forever etched in my heart. Happy birthday, Kiernan.”
Fellow radio personality Anele Mdoda also took to social media to honour Kiernan’s memory, sharing, “Happy birthday, SuperMega!!! AKA. Really miss this guy, man. The industry misses him. 37 today. Gone but never forgotten ❤️ Continue resting.”
His words reflect the sentiment of many, who continue to feel the impact of AKA's absence in the South African music scene.
Since the rapper’s untimely death, along with his close friend Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane, gunned down outside a Durban restaurant in February 2023, efforts to bring their murderers to justice have been ongoing.
Recently, the Durban Magistrate’s Court reserved judgement on a bail application made by two of the five men charged in connection with the brutal assassination.
Five men, Lindukuhle Mkhwanazi, Lindani Ndimande, Siyanda Eddie Myeza, Mziwethemba Gwabeni, and Lindokuhle Ndimande, were apprehended in the wake of the murders.
During the latest hearings, Ndimande sought bail based on new evidence, despite having been previously denied bail along with his co-accused.
As per the court proceedings, it was revealed that due to his incarceration, Gwabeni owes R100,000 in school fees for one of his children, a detail presented by the defence to support their case. However, Magistrate Vincent Hlatswayo dismissed the fresh bail application, affirming that the matters raised had been previously addressed.
