South Africa appears to have a morbid fascination with true crime content as the nation ranked in the top ten for countries most obsessed with the genre.

According to the findings of the TopRatedCasinos survey, South Africa ranked seventh in the world for their interest in true crime content.

This includes books and literature, movies, podcasts as well as television shows and programmes.

Australia topped the list with a 9.85 out of 10 score, followed by the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada and the United States, which all featured in the top five.

Meanwhile, South Africa recorded a score of 9.03/10 for their interest in true crime contact while Brasil, India and Austria also featured in the top ten.

The data also showed that South Africans were more keen on true crime movies and television shows more than consuming the genre in the form of a book or other literature.

This trend appears to be similar for the other countries in the top ten, although interest in true crime podcasts are also increasing in countries like Ireland and the US.

In order for TopRatedCasinos to compile their findings, their in-house experts collated a list of the 20 most popular true crime series on Netflix from sources, such as Vulture and Netflix Todum. They then used Google Trends to find out search interest in the most recently released series on Netflix.

This was done by setting the location to worldwide, the time frame 2004-present, and ensuring that each series searched for came under a topic to ensure language differences did not affect results.

Experts also looked at true crime as a general topic, finding search trends for the topic within books and literature, programmes and tv shows, as well as films. From this data, a score out of 10 was assigned for each, and an overall score was given to determine the country most obsessed with true crime. All data was collected on 15/03/2022 and is subject to change.

Researchers noted the popularity of Netflix’s true crime shows such as Inventing Anna and The Tinder Swindler across the globe and attributed shows of this kind to the growing interest in this genre.

TopRatedCasinos’s research also found that Inventing Anna is most popular in Canada with the maximum popularity score. This documentary follows a journalist who is investigating the rise and fall of Anna Delvey, who convinces New York’s elite into believing that she is a millionaire German heiress. Ireland also sees the appeal in this documentary, with a popularity score of 98/100. Following closely is the place where it is set, the United States, with a popularity score of 87/100.

One of Netflix’s other popular recent releases is Catching Killers, which is also most popular in Canada with a maximum popularity score of 100. This series has had two seasons to date, with its retelling of some of the most prolific serial killer cases from around the world, keeping viewers gripped. As it looks at cases around the world, it is no surprise that it has appeal for both Hong Kong (76/100 popularity score) and Ireland (74/100 popularity score) viewers.

Meanwhile, Murder among Mormons, which was released in March 2021, is a recent hit for Netflix with its revealing look into the deadly exploits that centres around the Mormon community. As an American series, the results are expected with the show most popular in the United States (maximum 100/100 popularity score), followed by Canada (68/100 popularity score), and then Australia (45/100 popularity score).

The fourth most recently released true-crime series is Crime Scene: Vanishing At The Cecil Hotel, which is most popular in Ireland.
