The Joburg Super Kings delivered a clinical performance with the ball to leave the Pretoria Capitals in a spin, but rain had the final say in the SA20 at the Wanderers on Thursday night.

Chasing 139 to win, the Joburg Super Kings never got their innings under way as rain came down hard, and the match was deemed a no-result.

The outcome means that the Super Kings remain unbeaten after three matches, and they stay at the summit of the log with 10 points, while the Capitals make inroads and move up to third on nine points after four matches.

The spin trio of Donovan Ferreira (2/17), Moeen Ali (2/21) and Imran Tahir picked up five wickets between them as they took advantage of unfamiliar spin-friendly conditions at the Wanderers.

Faf du Plessis used as many as seven bowlers as the Capitals struggled to navigate the spin threat carried by the trio.

Pretoria lost the early wicket of the dangerous Rahmanullah Gurbaz for a golden duck from the bowling of Ferreira.

Kyle Verreynne (39 off 31 balls, 6x4) top-scored for the visitors.

Batting at an unfamiliar No 3 on a wicket where the rest of his teammates struggled to get going, Verreynne led the way for the 2023 finalists before he was outfoxed by Tahir (1/17).

The wicket-keeper batter put on a partnership of 47, which was the highest of the innings, with English opener Will Jacks (15).

The Super Kings didn’t let loose their early momentum, and despite a late cameo by New Zealand all-rounder Jimmy Neesham (30 off 21 balls), the visitors could only manage a score of 48/3 between the end of the Powerplay and the 15th over.

The home side were relentless in attack and did not only break through their defences, but also dried up the runs in the middle period.

The last five overs only went for 38 runs as the Capitals could only manage a below-par score of 138/8 in 20 overs.

The Capitals will be happier of the two sides about the result, as they would have never anticipated the spin examination, which they failed emphatically.

The Super Kings would have wanted to have a crack at the target, with the bonus point also an option if the visitors failed to match their bowling innings. | Independent Media Sport
