Johannesburg – Despite carding his first under-par round of the tournament, Jaco van Zyl’s medal aspirations are all but over after round three of the Olympic golf tournament in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday.

Van Zyl lies in a share of 39th following a one-under 70 on the day to end on two-over going into the final round on Sunday. The SA player is 11 shots behind a medal position.

Great Britain’s Justin Rose leads the tournament on 12-under courtesy of a round of 65 on day three.

There was some good news for Van Zyl though, as he aced the par three eighth hole. Van Zyl became the second man to achieve the feat in an modern day Olympics, after Rose was the first with his hole-in-one on the par three fourth hole in round one.

Van Zyl’s compatriot Brandon Stone also carded his best round of the week, but a level par 71 hardly helped his cause as he moved up one spot to 50th on five-over ahead of round four.
