The Stormers must play catchup rugby with the rest of the South African sides in the United Rugby Championship starting this weekend in Wales.
While they are the only local side lingering outside the top eight on the tournament log, getting back some experienced playmakers should boost them for Saturday’s match against the Scarlets in Llanelli (5 pm start). A bonus point win away from home will significantly increase their chances of jumping into a playoff spot.
For the Lions, Sharks, and Bulls, the equation is simple, and they control their own destiny. Victories in their matches this weekend should keep them secured in the top eight.
It’s a tricky one for the Lions on Friday night (9.35 pm kick-off) who have six teams hot on their heels looking to grab the final qualifying spot from them.
They’ve also been the most inconsistent South African side regarding stringing back-to-back wins together and must change that to stay in contention for a first-ever playoff. Boosted by a number of returning players, they will look to empty the tank against Cardiff.

The Sharks’ injury woes with Bok legend Eben Etzebeth continue.
While he was cleared from his concussion symptoms, his long-awaited return has been delayed by a hamstring injury picked up at the Bok camp. But, for their match against Zebre Parma at Kings Park (2.45 pm start) on Saturday, Springboks Makazole Mapimpi and Andre Esterhuizen return. This should boost the side in Durban.

The Bulls are in a tricky space. They need to get back to winning ways and face a second-string Leinster in Pretoria on Saturday. So, there should be no problem for them to pick up a Loftus Versfeld (5 pm kick-off) victory. It will keep them in the hunt for second place on the overall log.
By the end of the weekend, if things go according to plan for the local franchises, all four could be in the top eight of the URC and in prime position to make the playoffs in May.
