As the stage is set for a thrilling encounter at Loftus Versfeld Stadium, Mamelodi Sundowns have ramped up preparations for Sunday's daunting Nedbank Cup semi-final against Kaizer Chiefs.

The match is expected to be more than just another fixture; it carries the weight of history and rivalry, with both teams vying for a shot at glory in one of the Premier Soccer League's knockout tournaments.

Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has been vocal about the formidable challenge that lies ahead, underscoring the need for his players to summon every ounce of skill and determination.

"This is no ordinary match," Cardoso declared at Thursday's press conference, amplifying the stakes as one team will inevitably see their cup journey come to an end. "With this match, we are approaching the final of the competition. You'll see the level of the opponents rise. We need to pay strong attention to Chiefs,” he emphasised.

Cardoso, returning to Johannesburg from a Champions League semi-final trip to Tunisia, acknowledged the importance of the moment, having previously faced the Chiefs in a tightly contested match last November.

In that encounter, Sundowns fell short, losing 5-4 in penalties following a goalless draw in the final of the inaugural Home of Legends Cup. His reflection on that match serves as a reminder of the rivalry that fuels both teams.

In this high-stakes clash, Sundowns are not just playing for a place in the final; they are also competing to reinforce their dominance in South African football. Cardoso hopes the team will showcase the style of play that has characterised their successful run this season and demonstrate their ability to overcome the challenges posed by a rival that has battled this season.
