South Africans have snapped up a whopping 70 percent of World Cup tickets since the third ticketing phase opened four days ago.

By late on Tuesday, Fifa had received more than 352 000 requests, at least 200 000 of which were from South African citizens.

And Jaime Byrom, executive chairman of Match, Fifa's official hospitality and ticketing service provider, said he hoped that most of the sales were for Bafana matches.

"Previously we saw very few South Africans buying tickets," said Byrom. "But now we are seeing a spike."

He said most of the applications were made online, with only 2 566 tickets requested through the FNB paper application forms.

Soccer fans will, from Wednesday, also be able to join a fan club to support their national team, on the Fifa.com website.

Byrom said being a member of the fan club would give fans access to tickets to their specific team matches.

"This will give spectator access to other fans from across the world," he said. "It will also enable fans to buy tickets sitting where the rest of the fans would be seated in the stadium."

Byrom confirmed that Fifa ticketing centres would open in host cities across the country from next April.

"People will then be able to walk in and buy tickets at the last minute," he said. He added that Match would also operate a last-minute sales call centre, allowing people to book by phone.

Category 1 seats, generally located alongside the pitch, range in price from $160 (R1 120) for a group match to $900 (R6 300) for the final. Tickets are sold on a fixed exchange rate of R7 to the dollar.

Category 2 seats are generally located alongside Category 1 seats, in the corners, and range in price from $120 (R840) for a group match to $600 (R4 200) for the final.

Category 3 seats are located alongside Category 2 seats, in the corners or behind the goals, and range in price from $80 (R560) for a group match to $400 (R2 800) for the final.

Category 4 seats are located behind the goals, and range in price from R140 for a group match to R1 050 for the final.

Tickets reserved for those who require wheelchairs cost the same as Category 4 seats, regardless of where they are located - and include a complimentary ticket for the person accompanying the ticketholder.
