The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has officially withdrawn its investigation into KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, clearing him of any wrongdoing and bringing an end to weeks of speculation and political noise.
The investigation, which had raised eyebrows and fueled widespread media coverage, was dropped this week after IPID found no evidence to support the allegations made against Mkhwanazi.
While the exact nature of the probe was never publicly detailed, sources suggested it was linked to internal factional disputes and attempts to discredit his leadership. Mkhwanazi, known for his tough stance on crime and uncompromising leadership style, has long been a respected yet polarising figure in law-enforcement circles.
His supporters have welcomed the decision as vindication, calling the probe a “snake’s trick” aimed at derailing his efforts to clean up policing in the province.“All these snake tricks have fallen flat,” one source close to Mkhwanazi said.
“He remains focused and committed to serving the people of KwaZulu-Natal without fear or favour.”
Social media has been flooded with praise under the trending hashtag #GoodWorkNdonga, with many calling on Mkhwanazi, whose clan name is "Ndonga", to continue his mission of rooting out corruption and fighting crime in the province.
IPID spokesperson Robbie Raburabu confirmed the withdrawal but declined to comment on the details, citing confidentiality protocols.
“The investigation has been closed as there was insufficient evidence to proceed,” he said. Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi has not issued a formal statement, but sources within the provincial police say he is more determined than ever to stay the course.
With the cloud now lifted, attention returns to his crime-fighting efforts across the province — where communities continue to grapple with drug syndicates, violent crimes, and corruption.
