Joburg - The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has identified a number of high-pressure areas where schools received an overwhelming number of Grade 1 and 8 applications that exceeded the capacity of learners that they could afford to accommodate.

Gauteng MEC for Education, Matome Chiloane, provided an update on placements for Grade 1 and Grade 8 learners who applied during the 2023 Online Admissions application period on Sunday.

The MEC said there were about 313 primary schools and 234 secondary schools that were regarded as high-pressure schools.

The top 10 high-pressure primary schools are:

  1. Laerskool Akasia in Pretoria North with a 255 grade capacity and 1538 applications received.
  2. Laerskool Theresapark in Pretoria North with a 210 grade capacity and 1172 applications received.
  3. Laerskool Rachel De Beer in Pretoria North with a 211 grade capacity and 1138 applications received.
  4. Palmridge Primary School in Germiston with a 182 grade capacity and 1076 applications received.
  5. Lakeside Primary School in Boksburg with a 160 grade capacity and 957 applications received.
  6. Alston Primary School in Germiston with a 200 grade capacity and 951 applications received.
  7. Stoneridge Primary School in Alberton with a 240 grade capacity and 882 applications received.
  8. Selcourt Primary School in Springs with a 120  grade capacity and 881 applications received.
  9. Opelweg Primary School in Alberton with a 240 grade capacity and 856 applications received.
  10. Alberview Primary School in Alberton with a 150 grade capacity and 853 applications received.

The top 10 high-pressure secondary schools are:

  1. Hoërskool Langenhoven in Pretoria North with a 300 grade capacity and 2607  applications received.
  2. Alberton High School in Alberton with a 210 grade capacity and 2488 applications received.
  3. Parktown Boys' High School in Parktown with a 152 grade capacity and 2328 applications received.
  4. Phumlani Secondary School in Germiston with a 200 grade capacity and 2228 applications received.
  5. Sir John Adamson High School in Joburg South with a 450 grade capacity and 2152 applications received.
  6. Hoërskool President in Joburg South with a 450 grade capacity and 2108 applications received.
  7. Boksburg High School in Boksburg with a 250 grade capacity and 2040 applications received.
  8. Hoërskool Akasia in Pretoria North with a 235  grade capacity and 2003 applications received.
  9. Jeppe High School For Boys in Kensington with a 220 grade capacity and 1952  applications received.
  10. Northcliff High School in Joburg South with a 270 grade capacity and 1900 applications received.

In order to assist high-pressure schools accommodate more learners, the department said it will augment classroom shortages and enhance space by providing schools with mobile units and transferring funds to schools for self-build classroom projects.

GDE said this process will avail about 599 additional classrooms to primary schools and 698 additional classrooms to secondary schools

“We must emphasise that, with all these interventions, unfortunately it will not be possible to accommodate all applicants to the schools they prefer; however, all applicants will be placed at schools with available space,“ the department said.
