A 44-year-old man has been arrested in Modimolle, Polokwane, after he allegedly kidnapped and attempted to murder a 42-year-old woman.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the incident occurred on December 24 last year, when the suspect returned from work and found the woman at home.

It's believed that they cohabited the house.

When the victim later went to fetch water from a neighbour's house, the suspect allegedly followed and began assaulting her.

Ledwaba added that the suspect allegedly forced the woman into his vehicle and drove to Soshanguve, Pretoria, where he continued to assault her before locking her in the car boot.

Reports further suggested that the suspect drove with her to Gauteng in Soshanguve, assaulting her all the way. He subsequently locked her inside the vehicle's boot. The vehicle had a breakdown along the way to Swartdam, and it was abandoned, and that was when the victim managed to escape.

A case of kidnapping and attempted murder was opened in Modimolle, and a warrant of arrest was issued on February 7.

Ledwaba further stated that after months of searching, detectives received a tip-off on April 16 about the suspect's whereabouts, leading to his eventual arrest.

“Members of Modimolle Detectives received the information about the suspect, who was from Pretoria to Modimolle in Limpopo Province.

“The same day at around 18:00, the suspect was located and arrested along R101 road to Modimolle by detectives, Waterberg District Flying Squad, together with the RIU private security company,” he added.

The suspect is set to appear before the Modimolle Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, April 22, facing charges of kidnapping and attempted murder.

Ledwaba confirmed that the investigations are still underway.
