Vikash Mathura and Jack Devnarain are widely considered to be two giants of the South African entertainment industry.
Combined, their portfolio of work has spanned radio, television, stage, and the big screen, with each of them amassing an enviable fan base.
Despite being friends for almost 30 years, and sharing a mutual admiration for each other’s work, they have never had the opportunity to collaborate on a project. But that is about to change.
Devnarain, a renowned television and film actor, has been entertaining South African audiences for the past 25 years.
During this time, Mathura has been celebrated as one of the highest profiled radio and theatre personalities in the country. Whilst Devnarain was serenading his fans with his daily appearances on “Isidingo” (SABC 3), Mathura was selling-out at every major concert venue around the country with the record-breaking “Peru & Bala” comedy tours.
Their fans are thrilled that these two legends are now going to be seen together for the first time on stage, in the hysterical new comedy tour, “Harry & the Gupta”!
Mathura reprises his role of “Harry”, a brash Durban entrepreneur who has become a favourite among theatre patrons. Devnarain plays the suave and infamous businessman “Gupta”, a character that has not exactly endeared himself to the South African public. “Harry & the Gupta” is set in the mythical Saxonwold Shebeen, where the story begins with Harry (Durban’s ‘Con of Cons’) meeting the Gupta (Joburg’s ‘Don of Dons’) for the first time. Their chance encounter results in a series of comic misunderstandings.
The show then takes the audience on a hilarious journey as these protagonists discuss anecdotes from their respective lives, whilst sharing a drink…or three! The interaction between Harry and the Gupta, who are from opposite ends of society, makes for rib-tickling comedy.
The famous uncles “Peru & Bala” also make a special appearance in this intriguing tale.
“Harry & the Gupta” is a Top Dawg co-production and will be playing to audiences in a national tour of at least 30 shows! Fans in no less than five provinces will have the opportunity of watching this masterpiece!
* The show opens at The Lyric At Gold Reef City Casino in Johannesburg on July 21 before moving on to the Izulu Theatre, Sibaya Casino in Durban. Book through Computicket .
