Frustrated residents from Shallcross, who have been without water for two weeks, embarked on protest action today hoping to "get a reaction from the municipality".

Police were deployed to Klaarwater Road after residents burned tyres and called for the eThekwini Municipality to hear their cries for a continuous water supply.

Mahendra Lillkan, a community leader, said: "There has been no water in extension 1 in Shallcross for two weeks. Residents are frustrated and have resorted to protest action to get a reaction from the municipality. This is a last resort as people are battling without water and there are major issues with water tankers."

A resident from extension 1, who did not want to be named, said the protest was sparked by frustration after the water tanker tasked to service the area did not stop to provide residents with water.

“The Jojo tanks have been dry for a few days. The tanker supplied water to a few residents but did not stay long enough for all residents to access water. They also did not fill the Jojo tanks. Residents tried to stop the driver but he just drove off. This incident sparked the protest. We have gone weeks without water. There are hundreds of elderly residents in this community. How can they be expected to live without water?” he said.

The eThekwini Municipality did not respond at the time of publication.
