Welkom - The Hawks in Welkom have launched a manhunt following a robbery at a supermarket early on Monday.

Commercial explosives were used to blast open the safe at a Pick n Pay in the town and steal cash, Captain Stephen Thakeng said.

The robbers climbed into the ceiling in the public toilets, from where they got into the shop.

They stole an undisclosed amount of money, meat and other groceries. An employee discovered the burglary while reporting for work at 5am, and alerted the police. Some bags were missing from the shelves, and police believed they were used to carry the money.

Thakeng said the shop's alarm system had been tampered with and some parts of the CCTV cameras were missing.

“The back door was found broken. Nobody has been arrested, thus the extensive manhunt initiated by the Hawks,” he said. - Sapa
