Smithfield - A Free State warrant officer has been fined R10 000 or six-months imprisonment suspended for five years, for assaulting a woman at a petrol station, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) said on Tuesday.

“Maratshane pleaded guilty to two counts of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm following an Ipid investigation,” spokesman Moses Dlamini said in a statement.

He was sentenced by the Smithfield Magistrate's Court on Monday.

Security footage filmed on April 5, and later broadcast on eNCA, showed a man in plain-clothes striking and kicking a woman at a petrol station.

Two uniformed officers allegedly allowed him to leave the scene without arresting him.

Dlamini said Maratshane had since been dismissed from the police.
