Two Free State policemen were shot and wounded when they chased after ATM robbers in Welkom on Wednesday.
Police spokeswoman Puleng Motsoeneng said two ATMs were destroyed with explosives around 2am in Welkom on Wednesday.
An undisclosed amount of cash was stolen by five armed men.
Motsoeneng said residents alerted police, who arrived as the robbers were making their getaway.
The robbers shot at the police and an officer was wounded in the upper left arm.
Members from the Welkom Flying Squad also arrived and chased the robbers, who fled in two vehicles.
Motsoeneng said another police official was wounded during the chase.
“Both the officials are stable and not in danger,” she said.
