Eleven people died and 11 were injured when a minibus taxi and a car collided head-on on the N3 near Harrismith, in the Free State, on Friday afternoon, paramedics said.

The vehicles veered away from each other on impact and skidded to a halt in the accident at 4.30pm, said Netcare 911 spokesman Jeffrey Wicks.

Five passengers in the car and six in the minibus taxi were declared dead at the scene, he said.

Of the 11 injured, three were critically hurt and were taken to the Harrismith hospital. - Sapa
