A Free State man fleeing from police was arrested after he got stuck in mud when he jumped from a taxi, police said on Tuesday.

Spokesman Sergeant Mmako Mophiring said police received information that a man was transporting dagga from the Monontsa Village in Qwaqwa to Phuthaditjhaba and that he was travelling by taxi.

When police stopped the taxi the man was believed to be travelling in, he got out and ran away.

Mophiring said police searched the taxi and found nothing. They then chased the man. The man tried to cross a waterway between two villages, but he got stuck in mud “up to his ankles”.

“The police found him stuck with the bag containing 9.6kg of dagga.”

The 31-year-old was arrested for dealing in dagga and will appear in the Phuthaditjhaba Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, said Mophiring. – Sapa
