A former senior Free State municipal official was found guilty of murdering Naledi mayor Motlantsi “Joko Motloi” by the Bloemfontein High Court on Thursday.

Free State Judge President H M Musi found Caroline Mokgothu and her paramedic husband James Mokgothu guilty on the main count of murder.

They also faced an alternative charge of conspiracy to commit a crime.

Assassin Senowe Khaka, 28, from Lesotho, admitted to the murder and was sentenced to 21 years' imprisonment during a separate trial.

At the time of Motloi's murder in May 2010, the municipality had been plagued by infighting between councillors, municipal officials and workers since 2006.

The Free State government disbanded the Naledi town council, based in Dewetsdorp, soon after the killing and appointed an administrator until new elections could be held. -
