Bloemfontein - Winter holiday matric classes started in the Free State on Monday, as part of the province’s efforts to achieve a matric pass rate of 85 percent this year.

“The winter school programme is a tried and tested intervention tool which never fails to produce results,” Free State education MEC Tate Makgoe said.

He urged pupils to use the opportunity to revise and prepare for the exams.

The programme started in the Xhariep district on Monday, and would run to July 5. In the other districts, the programme would run from July 1 to 12.

Pupils from rural and farming areas would be taken to matric camps at various schools, where they would live for the duration. Those in urban areas could make use of “walk-in centres”.

Makgoe said the winter matric camps would focus on subjects such as mathematics, physical science, accounting, business studies and economics. - Sapa
