Welkom - Facial reconstruction was done on a human skeleton found near Klippan Dam last year by a fisherman in Welkom, Free State, police said on Tuesday.
The skeleton could be that of middle-aged man, Captain Stephen Thakeng said in a statement.
“The rubber boots used in mining as well as a bag were found next to the body and we suspect that the deceased was an illegal miner,” he said.
No relatives had come forward to claim the body at the Welkom government mortuary, and the skull was sent to a forensic anthropology research centre to reconstruct the face. The reconstruction was done in April.
“The reconstruction process was done in the department of anatomy faculty of health sciences at the University of Pretoria,” Thakeng said.
