A family of five is lucky to be alive after a kudu jumped in front of their car, while they were driving between Viljoenskroom and Kroonstad, in the Free State on Wednesday morning.

Medics attending the scene said the kudu apparently jumped a fence and landed in front of the car.

The force of the impact sent the animal over the bonnet, smashing the car's windscreen and flattening the roof.

Netcare911 spokesman Chris Botha said they believe the animal died at the scene.

Meanwhile, the driver of the car walked away with only minor cuts and bruises.

Botha said the driver and his wife were seated in the front of the vehicle with the couple's three young children in the back. The children were between the ages of four and seven-years-old

“They were all assessed at the scene and found to be in good health,” he said. - IOL
