Sasolburg - A man was killed while being chased by the police in Sasolburg, in the Free State, on Wednesday, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) said.

The police tried to pull over a silver Toyota Tazz at 2am, but the driver sped off, Ipid spokesman Moses Dlamini said.

“The police allege that they gave chase and also asked for backup. (They) alleged that six police officers shot at (the) deceased's car.”

The driver, Moeketsi Mafube, 22, apparently lost control of the car and it crashed near a petrol station near Sebokeng in Gauteng.

He was found dead on the scene. No firearms were in his possession. The Ipid had opened a murder docket. No arrests had yet been made, said Dlamini. - Sapa
