The wife of a Bloemfontein school principal drove in front of a truck on the N1 highway in a suicide bid, the Volksblad newspaper reported on Monday.

When the crash did not kill her, she got out and ran in front of a smaller truck and died on impact.

Nicolene Hugo, 51, wife of Dawie Hugo, the principal of the Lettie Fouché school in Bloemfontein, was apparently upset after arguing with her eldest daughter on Sunday.

She left their flat at the school boarding house to go for a drive “to clear her head”, the report said.

Friends told the newspaper Hugo had suffered from depression.

Paramedics and police were on the scene shortly after Hugo tried to drive into a truck around 11.30am on Sunday.

The yellow truck, which was transporting cattle, swerved to miss her and only scratched her white Nissan bakkie, which landed in a ditch.

When people tried to help Hugo, she ran in front of a smaller oncoming truck on the N1, the report said.

Free State police spokeswoman Colonel Annelie Wrensch confirmed the incident. – Sapa
