Bloemfontein - An off-duty Free State policeman stopped three men who tried to rob a delivery van at a tuck shop in Grasslands on Wednesday, police said.

Warrant Officer Zweli Mohobeleli said the incident happened around 10am at a tuck shop in Grasslands, near Bloemfontein.

The bread delivery van had stopped at the tuck shop when three men pointed a firearm at the driver. They took cash from him.

An off-duty policeman intervened and was shot at.

The policeman called for help and police at the nearby Bloemspruit police station helped him arrest two men. Police confiscated a firearm and cash found on the two men. One suspect was at large.

The two men would appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court to face charges of armed robbery, Mohobeleli said.
