Ten residents of Bolokanang appeared in the Petrusburg Magistrate’s Court on Friday after protesters closed the N8 route between Bloemfontein and Kimberley in a protest against services delivery.

Free State police spokesman Warrant Officer Zweli Mohobeleli said ten people were arrested on public violence charges on Thursday.

The residents blocked the N8 with objects, which closed the busy route between Bloemfontein and Kimberley. Various vehicles were stoned and motorists were advised to use a detour.

Mohobeleli said those arrested were released on a warning on Friday.

An official of the Letsemeng Local Municipality told the local radio station OFM they were unaware of the reasons for the latest protests.

Bolokanang residents have protested on various occasions this year and disrupted traffic on the N8.

The reasons included incomplete roads and the lack of water and sanitation.

Mohobeleli said police were still on the scene at Petrusburg and were monitoring the situation on Friday. - Sapa
